Providing Full Service Community and Clinic Based Therapy for Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities
The speech-language therapy specializes in providing diagnostic and therapeutic services to young children. Staff members are state licensed and are members of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. They provide services in the areas of speech and/or language delay, Down syndrome, autism, severe neurological impairments, oral motor/feeding difficulties, stuttering, and other voice disorders. In addition, therapists work closely with the classroom staff, other disciplines, such as physical therapy and occupational therapy along with parents to assist in carry-over of new skills attained in therapy.
The sights and sounds of the Rainforest stimulate children while they receive physical therapy. Children experience one-on-one sessions to enhance their gross motor skills. Each child has a treatment plan with six-month goals. Activities are child-directed with the environment set up to provide the proper input and encourage specific skills. Once motor learning occurs, children are provided the opportunity to practice in an expanded environment with home and classroom consultation and classroom sessions with their peers.
Parents are invited to observe and participate in the physical therapy sessions as able. Special equipment is provided for those who require support and positioning. The equipment is customized to fit the child and used in the classroom. Recommendations for monitoring of equipment for home are also provided.
Occupational therapy seeks to enhance a child's play skills and global development. Depending on the child's individual needs, the treatment plan may include any of the following: fine motor skill development; functional play skill development; oral motor intervention; self-care skill development (self-feeding, simple dressing); sensory integration therapy; and gross motor play to improve a child's overall strength, motor planning, balance and coordination. Occupational services are individualized based on the child's developmental needs.
