DISCOVERY LEARNING CENTER

3100 75th St. North, St. Petersburg, FL 33710

The Discovery Learning Center Preschool Program utilizes experienced special education, therapeutic and support staff to provide a wide variety of Early Intervention Services.  The program serves children “at risk” for developmental delays and children who are developmentally disabled and/or physically challenged.

The preschool services are available to children ages two months to three years.  This comprehensive developmental preschool provides infant stimulation, developmentally appropriate activities, parental involvement and specialized therapy.

Each child enrolled in the Discovery Learning Center will learn skills that will enhance the quality of his/her personal and social lifestyle, and assist in helping each child reach his/her greatest potential.

OUR TEAM

Our interdisciplinary team approach consists of an early intervention teacher, social worker, nurse and assistive technology educator.

Our early intervention teachers are highly trained and experienced working with children of all abilities.  Each child has a social worker to provide service coordination and family support and to act as a liaison for families for all community resources.

A nurse is available to assist families with preventive health care, to dispense medication and to act as a liaison between physician and school.

The assistive technology educator, working in the Margaret E. Dickins Children's Technology Center and Sensory Room, provides the setting for children to learn using specialized equipment.  Through the benefit of computer software, augmentative communication devices and switch toys, children learn practical skills such as reading readiness, cause and effect, and daily living skills.

Therapists are also a part of the team as prescribed by the child’s physician.  Occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech therapists provide consultation to teachers, conduct evaluations and provide direct therapy to children.

An early intervention teacher involves both the child and parents to address a variety of skill areas – cognitive, language, gross and fine motor as well as socialization and self-help skills.
