The Adult Technology Achievement Center (ATAC)
The Adult Technology Achievement Center (ATAC) incorporates the use of computers that have been adapted with switches, touch screens, and customizes mouse, trackballs and keyboards to remove any barriers that a disability may introduce when using a computer.
ATAC curriculums teach adult clients academics as well as introduce them to creative software and technology. Educational and recreational development through ATAC parallels directly with clients’ individual goals and choices. For instance, subject matter includes safety, living skills such as budgeting, cooking and using public transportation, community sign recognition, and sign language.
In addition, our specialized literacy program can be an important stepping-stone for clients as they try to meet educational goals, secure employment or simply interact with the community. Clients interested in the literacy program start with varying levels of literacy.
After an assessment, an individualized curriculum is established. Depending on the client, he/she may start with simple letter-recognition or more advanced work on grammar, sentence structure and improved reading comprehension. One innovative result of the literacy program is a client-produced newsletter, The ADT Times.
